A full-time, paid summer internship for graduate students

The DFI Community Revitalization Fellowship is a full-time, paid summer internship for graduate students. Fellows work with the DFI team on pre-development projects within DFI’s seven core areas of focus.

Fellowship work

Fellows gain experience in real estate development, finance tools, and public–private partnerships. Common work tasks include:

  • Community engagement: meeting project stakeholders, gathering and synthesizing community input

  • Community visits: touring local projects, collecting field work data

  • Modeling: developing financial models to test feasibility

  • Program communications: writing blog posts and preparing presentations

  • Project research: conducting market research, creating case studies related to commercial and residential development, researching industry best practices

Compensation and expectations

Fellows receive an $11,600 stipend for 40 hours of work per week, typically from mid-May to early August. Provided leave includes five days of paid vacation and UNC holidays. Travel may be required, including occasional overnight trips.

Qualifications

Graduate students in planning, business, public administration, and related disciplines are encouraged to apply. Related disciplines might include public health, social work, geography, architecture, or landscape architecture. Applicants should be interested in gaining practical experience in real estate development and finance, particularly within DFI’s areas of focus.

Fellows will use GIS and Microsoft Excel. Prior experience with these tools through coursework or professional experience is helpful but not required.
